Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) received an overwhelming response to our expression of interest, resulting in an extensive series of site tours this week at Menzies Aviation's facility at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI). The tours provided members with a detailed view of user experiences, showcasing how drivers, staff and cargo operators will interact with the precinct from arrival through to cargo handover. Participants also observed the equipment, technology and ground-handling solutions ready for deployment, demonstrating the operational maturity of the facility ahead of first flights. These insights offered members a practical understanding of how WSI will function as a new gateway for international trade. Importantly, discussions throughout the tours centred on real-world commercial outcomes (including service models, capacity planning, landside efficiencies and transitional arrangements) as members prepare for the significant growth in trade expected across Sydney's two major international airports. A special note of appreciation is extended to Andrew Tonna and Dylan Brown for their hospitality and the highly professional presentations delivered throughout the tours. Their engagement and openness contributed greatly to the value of the sessions. These are exciting times, with Menzies Aviation confirmed to handle Singapore Airlines' inaugural international service into WSI on 23 November 2026. In the interim, we anticipate freighter operations commencing soon, providing early opportunities for industry to engage with the new airport and supporting the broader evolution of Sydney's air cargo landscape. FTA will continue to lead national engagement on airfreight policy and operational matters and looks forward to hosting members early in the new year at the inaugural Australian Air Freight Summit — a landmark event shaping the future of Australia's air cargo sector. |
