6 October 2026

We have released the final report on the Import risk review for the inclusion of avian material in aquaculture feed. This is an addendum to the final report for the Assessment of a prescribed heat treatment as a risk management measure for fish and fish products for use as pet food and stockfeed.

A single submission was received on the draft report, (Animal Biosecurity Advice 2026-A02), which was supportive of the report and the proposed risk management measures. There were no significant changes between the draft and final report.

The final report has now been published on the department's Import risk review for the inclusion of avian material in aquaculture feed page.

The review examined the biosecurity risks of imported aquaculture feed made with avian material. It considered scientific evidence, industry practices, and practical implementation issues. The review recommends an additional heat treatment step to reduce the biosecurity risk of this product.

Following the release of the final report, import conditions will be developed and published on Australia's Biosecurity Import Conditions website BICON.

More information about this risk analysis is available on the department's Import risk review for the inclusion of avian material in aquaculture feed page.
