FTA / APSA - ADVOCACY

'Disruption Event' Port of Melbourne

Following advocacy from FTA, APSA, the Container Transport Alliance (CTAA) and Shipping Australia Ltd (SAL), the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) determined that the prolonged container supply chain disruptions at the Port of Melbourne (PoM) justifies the notification of a "Disruption Event" under a Voluntary Code of Practice (VCoP).

The first in a series of scheduled meetings took place on Thursday 4 January 2024 focussing on five (5) key areas:
  1. Manage road congestion and queuing in and around the Port precinct.
  2. Mitigate the impacts to exporters, and particularly regional exporters, with time-sensitive cargo.
  3. Engage closely with the Big Build projects, e.g., West Gate Tunnel, to ensure consideration of the additional impacts of project activity on the currently disrupted container supply chain.
  4. Monitor empty container movements and storage to identify or anticipate any blockages or capacity constraints.
  5. Provide transparency of the Disruption Event, impacts and actions to be taken through periodic communication to industry, including transparency of the costs being incurred by industry because of the disruption.
FTA / APSA has been allocated the lead on action item 2 and to that end, we request that members provide feedback to Tom Jensen (Head of International Freight & Logistics - FTA / APSA) at tjensen@FTAlliance.com.au

As outlined in our member notice from Friday 29 December 2023 and a customer notice provided by ACFS, significant disruption also been experienced at DP World Brisbane (and nationally).

For the duration of what is likely to be a prolonged period of Protected Industrial Action (PIA), FTA / APSA will advocate for similar mechanisms as VCoP at Port Botany, the Port of Brisbane and Fremantle to ensure shared and accurate information, and support State-based responses to and management of congestion impacts.

FTA / APSA - IN THE MEDIA

Red Sea and Industrial Action

Over the last few weeks, it is the Red Sea hostilities that is particularly capturing the media's attention - while making ongoing commentary on this, FTA / APSA has been the predominant voice for the international trade sector drawing attention to domestic supply chain issues and the need for reliable and controlled cost trade gateways at Australian stevedore operations.

Patrick Terminals announce new pricing structure effective 4 March 2024

Patrick Terminals have flagged the new fee structure to be effectible 4 March 2024. A promising sign for exporters is that there will be a 30% differential between a Terminal Access fee for import containers as against an export booking fee. Up until now, there has been a "follow the leader" outcome with landside fee increases being relatively similar between all of the container stevedoring companies, and on a similar upwards trajectory.  READ MORE
